![]() Oh my God, am I really signing myself up for this? Am I really making myself accountable to the Internet and the world and everyone? Am I insane? Yes. This is the deal, chicas: a Lazy Man Triathlon. Basically, a Lazy Man Triathlon means that you do all of the activity required for a real triathlon, only you have a longer period of time in which to get it done--instead of doing all of this in a single day, we have 5 weeks to complete it all. The beauty of this is that we can all follow along in our various states and cities. You can track your progress (and watch mine) online via the magic of Google Shared Documents. We're borrowing the rules from a Chicago group, who gave me the idea.
Don't like to swim? You can do the double run option: run (etc.) 52.4 miles, bike 112 miles. Don't like to bike? There's the double swim option: swim 5 miles, run (etc.) 26.2 miles. Afraid that you're going to get bored, sticking with just three things for 5 whole weeks? Don't be. You can have trade offs for various activities. From the Chicago group: So, basically, this is the most flexible training program with measurable results that I could find. Using the Chicago group's suggestions, we can make out swaps for other fitness activities, like belly dancing or Pilates too. Who's with me? Seriously, if I am crazy enough to do this, anyone can. Plus, we will offer amazing prizes! The Lazy Waisters Triathlon will begin on on Midnight, Saturday, August 23 and end on Midnight, October 3. If you want to play along, you'll just need to e-mail me before Friday to sign up. I'm Weetabix (at) Elastic Waist Dot Com! 15 CommentsLeave a comment |

If you can swap out for bellydancing and yoga and take as long as you need, it's really not a triathalon anymore, is it? In my experience a yoga class and a 5 mile run are completely different animals, endurance-wise, so it seems a little too lenient to let people swap so freely.
I was kind of excited about the concept of hearing your experience with a real couch-to-triathalon experiment. Or are you planning to use this as a training program for a real one?
Ah, yes. It says "training program" right there. I'm sleepy.
Oh my freakin' gawd. I can't believe I'm agreeing to this.
Put my name on the list.
Everyone thinks of the Ironman when they hear the word "triathlon," but there are lots of different distances. There are sprints and super-sprints, where you do a much shorter triathlon all in the same day. I did a super-sprint this year and it was a lot of fun, and have done sprints and even Olympic distance races in the past (which was too long for me). The cool thing about an actual race is that you get that rush of crossing the finish line and maybe even getting a medal. Seriously, consider training for one next year, you might love it. I plan to do a sprint next year.
What if you don't know how to swim and don't own a bike? Is there a triple run option? Haha. I wish you much luck!
I am pretty excited about this. I will be doing double-run since I don't have access to a pool and San Francisco is way too cold to swim outside. But beyond that, I think I'm going to be a purist about it to make it more of a challenge. If I do a yoga class, great, but it won't count toward the total. I want to start NOW!
I'm on board!
Count me in for the double run and bike option.
ALL HAIL TRIATHELETES!
I'm going to get serious and buy some goggles for swimming tonight. Is a lap actually 2 lengths? How many laps is a mile? I wish I could learn that groovey flip turn. I've tried, but very little success.
Biking is my strongest event. I ride to work 5 miles a few days every week. But I'll have to dig deep on the running thing.
Thanks for the big motivation!
Hi Sue,
Yeah, a lap is out and back. I was on the swim team as a kid, but that was a million years ago! How many laps is a mile depends on the length of your pool. In a standard 25m pool, it's 64 laps, or 128 lengths. In a fancy Olympic pool, it's 32 laps, or 64 lengths.
So, the total swimming commitment is 160 laps of a standard pool.
Hope this helps!
I am in, and I am going to try to be a purist and do the prescribed run/bike/swim distances. But if it turns out I am still spastic in the pool, I may opt for double run. But maybe I am less spastic now? We'll see at lap swim next week!

I really want to be in, but my bike is currently 500 miles away, and my gym doesn't have a pool....hmmmm
How does the google document thing work? Do you need to add me, because I can't figure out how to add myself.
Are you going to be starting this again after this one wraps up in October? I want to try but it is too late to join now I think...
