After yesterday's Starbucks scuttlebutt, I found myself craving a tasty unsweetened black iced tea this morning and swung by my local on the way to work. The cool (and sometimes painful) thing about the 'Bucks is that they are always changing things up, and the new kid on the block is the Vivanno. Available in either chocolate banana or a fruity orange mango banana, the stats on this frappuccino-like tasty bev seem impossible--250 calories, 16 grams of protein, 1 gram of fat and a somewhat mind-boggling 6 grams of fiber. Even the densest bread made from whole grains, twigs and perhaps a little sawdust only have 4 grams per slice, but a single grande cup of chocolate-y sweetness has all that goodness?

Bananas are one of my favorite fruits, so either flavor option was a go, but the orange mango seemed too abruptly fruity for a gloomy morning. In the end, I opted for the chocolate banana. The taste was...well, interesting. You can tell that it's almost fat free (I'm guessing the single gram of fat comes from the whole banana added as texture and sweetening agent) because the chocolate doesn't really get translated into the taste of chocolate, mostly just the suggestion of chocolate, much like the flavor you get in a Wendy's Frosty. There was a sensation that seemed similar to a Slim Fast shake...I think it was the added protein, as I also noticed the minor aftertaste that you get with the higher octane protein bars. I sensed something a little gritty on the first few sips, but that went away after about a minute, so I'm thinking it was the whey powder that wasn't completely incorporated into the mixture yet. While it's obviously not as delicious as, say, a chai frappuccino, the Vivanno has nutritional benefits that make it very appealing. I finished the entire drink and have to say, was too full to even touch the Fage yogurt I brought to work for breakfast. I don't know that the Vivanno can save the sinking stock price, but it's certainly going to be sending me to the Bux on mornings when I don't quite have my shit together (i.e. often).

Have you tried the Vivanno? How did you like it?

I thought it was alright. I had the chocolate one yesterday and I got a sugar rush after like you wouldn't believe. I don't think it was good enough that'd I'd continue to get it though. The chalky taste was a little much for me.

If taste was all there was to it then I'd say it grows on you. The banana pairs nicely with the chocolate flavor (I didn't care for the fruity one) However, I question whether it is worth the 40+ carbs, especially since (as usual with the Bux) there is no ingredient list available. BTW, check with your Local for a coupon for a free full size Vivanno. I got one yesterday!

I liked it! Got mine with soymilk and a shot of espresso and it was smooth, filling and pretty yummy (for Starbucks, which ain't the local health food store). I could equally taste the chocolate, banana and coffee - this is a great breakfast multitasker for, say, running late at Penn Station to NJ Transit or a quick hangover fixer-upper. Although it has too much sugar, I didn't get a headache or crash afterwards.

I got a free sample at my Starbucks one day last week, and I thought it was awful. Maybe adding the espresso shot would fix it though, because I fail to see the point in purchasing anything from Starbucks that doesn't taste like strong coffee.

I got the mango banana one this morning (soy milk, no whey powder, plus a shot) and it was GOOD. I wonder how the soy/no whey would change the calories/protein content? I also am gonna go for the matcha green tea powder next time instead of a shot of espresso.
