![]() As part of my quest to cut down on empty HFCS calories, I've greatly reduced my reliance on Starbucks over the last few months. In fact, yesterday was the first coffee I've had in two weeks, and I only had some because my BFF brought it to me the morning after some spectacular BlogHer debauchery. In the cool morning, standing on Geary Street, worried about being late to the airport, saying adieu to my BlogHer cohorts, it was a little cup of zen. Even though I may stray with caffeinated waters and iced teas, I would miss this feeling, the warmth enveloping your gut, making everything in the world okay. I never used to like coffee, but I do like the sweetened, frothy version of jet-fueled hot chocolate that they serve at the Bux. I practically wept tears of happiness when the first Starbucks opened in my little northern Wisconsin town. Quickly, I established the routine that sent SBUX stock soaring in the late '90s and early Aughts but now the economy is in the dunk tank and so is the average Jane's taste for expensive Joe. I admit that even I feel guilty about my impractical spending: after all, if I had just made coffee at home and pocketed that $5.00 per day (Venti vanilla nonfat no whip mocha is $4.33, plus tip), I would have enough money socked away in a money market account to have bought one of those Starbucks barista machines myself. Or just, you know, paid off my student loans. With SBUX averaging around $16.00 per share (almost half of what it was last year), the corporation has now finalized its list of store closings. None of "my" locals are closing but I recognize at least four stores I usually hit while traveling. But what about you? Are you losing one of your habitual morning stops? Are you impacted by the closings? If so, what are you going to do now? Oh the humanity! 7 CommentsLeave a comment |

I'm super lucky when I'm home. My friend used to work for starbucks and all the baristas there know me so if I go in at the right time I get my fix for free, haha.
I think I'd break down in tears if the starbucks I usually go to shut down...but I'm sure it would help my waist line and my sleep deprivation if I gave up the soy toffee nut lattes every day.
I used to work at an Sbux for about two years, quite a while ago when the company was doing juuuust fine... Caffeine doesn't affect me (I took 5 shots of expresso in an hour at work one day and fell asleep once I got home that night) so the closing of Sbux stores doesn't really affect me. On my rare stops to a store I only get tea, which really isn't worth the money it costs (although it's probably the cheapest thing on the menu). But! Sbux isn't selling drinks... it's selling an "experience," right? Or so they say.

Whoops, didn't mean to post that twice. My internet was all wonky.
I'm losing 9 stores in my area. But you know, it's probably for the best. I don't need to spend the money anyway, even if it was a once in awhile treat.
Starbucks is like crack to me, and I'm losing two stores that are within five miles of my house. I know you're thinking.... you have two Starbucks within five miles of your house? No, I actually have five Starbucks within five miles of my house, and these closings will cut me down to just three, so it's not really a tragedy or anything.
My city only has a few stores, several miles apart, so no closings imminent. Not that it would matter to me; I pour my own coffee. I pay around the same price for an entire pound of decent beans as I would pay for one undrinkable coffee drink from Starbucks.
