![]() When I first ran across these running skirts from SkirtSports, I scoffed a bit. A skirt, I scoffed. Who wants to run in a skirt? That is ridiculous, and impractical, to boot! Then I saw that the marketing material suggested that a running skirt would give you "sass!" and I ground my teeth. Then I saw that the manufacturer was suggesting that it was "unfeminine" to wear workout clothes, and that a workout skirt would let you be a girl--and run! Crazy! So I got really mad. I told my friend K.T. about these things, scoffing all the while, and she paused for a moment, and then said "You know--that's not such a bad idea." I was flabbergasted, but she was unmoved by my gibbering. "I hate running sometimes, because you feel like your ass is on display, and you get remarks from creepy dudes, and it's uncomfortable. A skirt would cover up your butt. It's a pretty good idea." She's got a point. As much as the marketing makes me want to throttle the geniuses behind the whole deal, a running skirt is not the worst idea in the world--it conceals your butt from creepy old men. It also covers up your thighs, which is a happiness for the women who hate them and think they are too jiggly--and if not seeing your thighs jiggle helps you get out there and exercise, I am all for that. It's got pockets in the built-in shorts (we will ignore the fact that they're insultingly called GirlShorties) so you can keep a key and cut down on chafing. I might not wear these things, but I might not think they are the worst idea in the world. What do you think? Would you wear a running skirt, or are you terribly insulted? 16 CommentsLeave a comment |

I choose to ignore the marketing gabble on this, and am enjoying the skort that I purchased from Athleta. I refuse to wear shorts to run because of the inevitable ride-up, but lately it's been too darn hot to run in my usual leggings. The skort keeps me cool and covers the shorts ride-up! And, truth be told, it's the first article of exercise clothing I've ever owned that makes me feel, well, cute and feminine! Not something I have previously cared about with my workout clothes, but when it is paired with such practicality, why not?
Oh no, running skirts are the best. I have issues with shorts riding up and not staying put when I run. The running skirts (I got some cheap ones from Target to try them out) are light weight and airy...perfect for running. I play Ultimate Frisbee in mine too, and they're great because they don't chafe, don't interfere with running, yet I feel like I'm not exposing myself to the world. They are so much better than shorts. And honestly, they look pretty cute too, better than running shorts. I'm a huge fan; just ignore all the marketing babble. I think I may try to buy a few more pairs so I always have some to run in.
You could argue that "running skirts" are simply tennis skirts under a new name. This isn't a new idea...however, it is one that I love. The advertising gimick is a little barf inducing...however, the idea is good, but not origional.
I love skirts. I would do almost any activity in a skirt--with short on underneath, of course!
I also love these. Running skirts take up less space in the gym bag I take to work (and I use public transportation so having less stuff to lug around is key), and I feel a lot less self-conscious in them than I do in shorts.
I'm not a runner, but my friends who are have these and swear by them. The main selling point is comfort and, yes, lack of "exposure" to teen twits riding around in souped-up cars with nothing better to do than harass women while we're trying to get a workout.
Not that I'm bitter.
I've been thinking about getting some from target for my walks/bike rides. LOVE the shorts underneath with pockets!
(And I think they market them the way they do because they think we're stupid, shallow people who won't buy clothes unless they're "cute.")
I soooo want to get one of these!! I am sick of running shorts that ride up, and feel like I might run further/faster with new gear.
Too bad we can't get Brad Pitt going commando in these skirts on a run. =P
I don't run, but I do have a bike skirt and I love it. It does add to the junk in your trunk since it has the padded butt, but since the skirt is on top you don't see that part and you can hop off your bike and run into the grocery store and not be all self concious about walking through the store in your cheesy bike shorts.
To Melissa - Some of the skirts still ride up. Like shorts, not all running skirts are created equally. I have friends who love the ones from Target. I have a Brooks one with a drawstring that I like, but can't use on long runs (over 6ish mi) because the ridge on the leg of the biking shorts underneath causes chafing. Eh, not everything's perfect. It does make you feel somewhat empowered and feminine.
Thanks for the insight!!! I'll pull a Goldilocks and keep trying til I find one that is juuuust right.
I have not tried these yet but now I'm definetly tempted to. I just thought I would look silly running in a skirt! But I can't run in shorts b/c I have major "chub rub"...other than that, I have great legs and always hide them when I run b/c of that chafing...yuck!
One more vote for the fabu running skirt! I bought one at |Winner's (I'm told it's like Canada's version of TJ Maxx) for under $20, and it was my fave workout gear from then on. I concur on the better butt coverage and reduced chafing and I really do feel cuter when I don it.
PS I also agree that the aforementioned marketing is vomitrocious and insulting!!
I like the idea, but the skirt shown in the photo is waaaaay too short for me. My legs are nice below the knees but don't really bear exposure above them, and that thing's barely crotch-length. Is it just that the model is freakishly tall? Please tell me that on an averageish person (I'm 5'7") at least some sport skirts are around knee-length?
I LOVE my running skirt. I have three in fact, from Atalanta (www.skirtgoddess.com). I relish the fact that I have more choices than boring old running shorts, and I see it as an advantage of being a woman that I can run in whatever I want. What I really love about my running skirt is that it allows me to wear compression shorts when I run (and avoid chub rub) without anyone having to see my butt in compression shorts. And hooray for good marketing - I love Atalanta's slogan - "Does this skirt make my butt look fast?"
YES!
Indeed. Running skirts are not a new concept. Even Kathrine Swtizer (of Boston Marathon fame, circa 1972) cut her teeth in a running skit.
Celesta, I have the commitment skirt from atalanta (as does Whitney) and this is PERFECT for preventing the chub-rub. FINALLY! And no, true, not all skirts are created equal.
I have a couple of the skirt-shorts combos that I bought specifically for outdoor activities because I like to play, but I also like to look cute, and this allows me to comfortably do both.
