To truly appreciate Sex and the City for what a phenominal show it is I think it's important to recognize that the sex, fashion and spending are all secondary to the story of four women and their bonds of friendship. The show is about women who thrive because they have each other, not because they have stilettos. The characters on that show find the strength to get through personal tragedies like the death of a parent, the end of a marriage or a cheating lover the same way us regular non "catty sluts" do, by leaning on our friends. Shoes are fun, sex is really fun, but no one would have cared about that show if the characters had not endeared themselves to the audience.

Kim says that the ideas of sexual liberation and women's lib where to be learned at the knees of our mothers and not from a television show. Unfortunatly not everyone was raised in such an open minded, accepting and empowering way. One would hope that when shows like this present us with ideas that we were not raised with, that we are aware enough to embrace those ideas and allow them to become part of us, but to also take them with a grain of salt and not abandon our own ideas and ideals.

That all being said, I think I'll go have a one-nighter and add another notch to my headboard. :-)

I'm so glad to see the return of the round table! With Sex and the City, yes, the consumerism is atrocious, and yes, their value system is totally skewed. But there's something about the whole fantastical romp of it that made the show so appealing. As the show went on, Carrie got more polished and also more obnoxious, but there was a time when she was frequently tripping, stuffing her mouth, getting drunk, making a fool out of herself, and being real. And that endeared so many of us to that character. Given that, I feel I have a duty to see the movie. And it looks fun!

Pet Peeve: Prescription drug commercials, I think they do more damage than good. Your doctor knows what's out there, they are bombarded by drug representatives looking for them to write for their drugs. I think TV ads for these products are abhorrent and serve only to perpetuate scaring people into running to their doctors petitioning for the newest drug, which may not necessarily be the best for them.

like: round table discussions

like: DS

dislike: people borrowing my truck and then finding what i left in it in the trash (!)

dislike: calling to find out why my stuff was in the trash and not getting an apology, but rather "you're just calling to yell at me" (i didn't raise my voice by the way)

dislike: perps/offenders twisting points around to guilt/blame victims/the offended

the women's movement...needs improvement
the (real) men's movement...needs to be invented - still
the women's movement without the men's movement is half-assed (?)

subway ads...many folks spit the footlong into two meals...so it's lunch for $2.50. i still do my taco hell double decker supreme w/beans sans beef for under $2. i agree subways are a lot of bread - wish one could get a footlong wrap instead...:D

regarding SATC - I've watched the show a few times, but haven't seen enough to really make an informed decision/vote about it. I wasn't totally put off... some of the fashions are well not what i would wear, but to each their own. I guess the movie might help me decide. I am not usually in front of the tv much - especially between 7-10pm. I see old reruns of SATC on late night at times. Never saw friends that much either for that matter. or seinfeld, but have watched some of that on reruns. i'm not much of a primetime tv addict.

Regarding 'relying on a man' - since when can a woman do that anyway? I think in older days it was a necessity and many times there was a heavy price paid. Maybe some meet/find some 'knight in shining armor' types. Many guys are one step away from long prison terms or already in there and doing that. Straight. Unfortunate, but straight. Not holding my breath. I keep hoping though. Sorry guys? Many of you don't seem to really want to impress this lady and many others with how much you really care/have it together/know what the _____ you are doing. Have it your way. I'll go mine. (sorry if this seems like a rant - maybe it is) There are plenty of dudes around giving all guys a bad name. Okay, I'll keep looking for better/good examples of heros in my lifetime. My brothers and uncles are some. c.b. to the rescue?

the slut 'movement'? :P

Looks like it's going to be a lively round table. Enjoyed it a lot.

I think that if you look at Sex and the City as a fairy tale it's fine. Just not like any of the people I grew up with in NYC. Anyone want to buy the complete first season -- unopened??? I never watched.

commenting on what Jackie posted earlier: "Kim says that the ideas of sexual liberation and women's lib where to be learned at the knees of our mothers and not from a television show. Unfortunatly not everyone was raised in such an open minded, accepting and empowering way." I am one of those girls. My mother, to this day, still does not believe in women's lib. She's an old school Donna Reed idolizing woman who believes that the man should cut the meat, the man should bring home the bacon, and the woman should be able to host tea parties, raise babies, and keep an immaculate home without blinking an eye or gaining a pound. Granted, she's relaxed a bit now, but I know that she secretly (or not so secretly) wishes that the world was more like Leave it to Beaver, and less like how it really is.

Separate note, SATC the movie -- LOVED IT. Loved absolutely every minute of it. I will not reveal anything for those who did not see it yet, but I will say that if you are a fan of the show at all, you will absolutely love this movie. Is there a lot of frivolous shopping and spending and overpriced goods in it? heck yes. But I like to think that I can take fashion tips from Carrie's $595 Jimmy Choo's and find a really great look-alike at Payless, Target, or Macys. I don't need to spend that kind of money to put together the same kind of style.

Last but not least, pet peeves: women drivers. Sorry, I know I'm one of them but for goodness sake, get OFF YOUR CELL PHONE and use your signal. These soccer-mom types are all driving around with their ridiculous over-sized gas-guzzling SUVs that their husband/boyfriends bought them and they can't even use their signals! Honey, flipping the signal is not going to ruin your manicure. I'm not a mind reader, I don't know that you're about to cut over two lanes of traffic to high-tail it to starbucks for your daily latte unless you signal. Thanks.

Great show today, as always. Looking forward to the rest of pet peeves week.

The majority of my pet peeves are language based and the remainder tend to spill over into the neurosis category. I'll spare you the latter.

No. 1: "Between you and I"
Friends, between you and me, the above phrase shows someone trying to put on airs about the polish of her grammar skills...and failing.

No. 2: "Per se"
Seriously, do you even know what that means? Does anyone?

No. 3: (in e-mail) "Thx," "Tx," and the like.
Does it take that long to write out Thanks? Really?

I like Sex and the City. The show had clever and imaginative writers. I play in the deep end of the pool too much. If I don't wade over to the kiddie side every once in a while, I'd drown!

A pet peeve: Parents who smack their kid in the head and tell him/her not to hit his/her sibling.

i don't see anything wrong with being both pro-woman (aka a feminist) and pro-satc. fashion is an art form. this country is based on consumerism. women love to talk about relationships and sex. i'd say each of these statements is true 90% of the time. if you're in the minority and don't "get" satc, fine - don't go see it. for everyone else, there's *something* to relate to...look, i consider myself a feminist too, but i like sex, and i enjoy shopping - not necc for expensive stuff, but moreso in an artistic way - i enjoy dressing up. i think pat fields is a genius. i think the creators & writers & actresses in this show tapped into something - women who embraced some of the feminist movement, but were still girly-at-heart - and ran with it. many across the country & world could relate. sure it's a fairy tale. sure "big" is never really gonna marry "carrie" in real life - but much like julia roberts' "pretty woman" (aka erin brokovich, but a hooker) - in the end, we all still all want to be cinder-fuckin- rella...aka charlotte!

All sluts need to have movement. Otherwise they're a 'just lay there', and that does not lead to quality slutage. A proper slut takes control and dictates the course of action.

Pet peeve: People who slow down when merging onto the highway. You need to accelerate up to speed people!

Side note: If anyone is interested *cough* Jackie *cough* I'll be in the lower east side tomorrow...

sex and the city's characters actually weren't catty at all -- they were the most supportive group of female characters on tv that i can remember. that's actually what the series was about, at it's core: female friendship - and there ain't nothing wrong with that - sisterhood is powerful, even when its dressed up in designer clothes and sleeping with the wrong guys ad nauseum! so calm down and just enjoy it. xo
