When we step out of the gym (or finish off our workout in our living room, like some brave people), we feel exhausted but exhilarated, because we have just kicked ass and we own the world. There's remembering why you're doing this--because you do want to kick so much ass, and there's realizing that you're getting there. And then there is the more abstract pleasure of really committing to something and following all way through, to the best of our abilities. Tell me about the victories you've had, your triumphs, and all the times you were absolutely and completely amazing and wonderful. Tell me about your favorite parts of doing this. Come here and let me give you a high five. 2 CommentsLeave a comment |

it is definitely when I was able to touch my toes! I mean, I'm in pretty good shape (6 foot one inch man at 179...not bad), but my flexibilty was awful. A whole lota yoga later, whapah! I can touch my toes. =)
When I got enough definition in my arms and core to see the bones on top of my shoulders (they're very bony to begin with) and my hip bones. It was like, "hey, you guys were responsible for pretty much all the teasing I got in middle school, but damn, it's nice to see you again..."
It's nice to turn (physically) back into the fit person I got used to being and gradually getting as strong as I was in college. Yeah, it took a ton of work, but the gym is once again a place to de-stress; lifting is now pseudo-yoga (I get my breathing and form just perfect), and I've gone back to my 10-10-10 ADD-cardio workout (10 minutes each on 3 machines; bike, treadmill, stairmaster, or rowing machine).
That last bit is the most important... it makes the hours I spend staring at the stupid machines in my lab worthwhile and infinitely less stressful. I can focus on getting to go to the gym after I spend all day stewing over my data and worrying if I'll ever graduate. The nicest thing about working out is you get nearly instantaneous results. You feel better in 2-3 weeks, usually. Well, it's a lot more instantaneous than school work, let me tell you... ;)
