To be sophisticated nowadays, you should know how to make a cocktail. And by make a cocktail, I don't mean pour some juice into some vodka and stir. Not that vodka and various fruit-flavored juices don't have their very distinguished and totally delicious place in the world. But sometimes, you need to step it up a notch, kick it up a peg, rev it up a scosh--you want to be the hostess who can smoothly offer your guests, say, a refreshing Tom Collins. And you want to always just happen to have all the ingredients on hand, because cocktail improvisation just never really works out the way it should. So read up and make sure you stock your home bar properly. Then practice your form with the shaker, and then sophistication (and delicious drinks, and a pleasantly buzzed Friday night) will be within your grasp.
