When I was a kid, I was obsessed with the ice cream truck--much like Nicole of Baking Bites. Of course I was. I was not interested in boring cones or uninteresting ice creams on sticks; I wanted a treat with a surprise inside. I wanted ice cream with stuff in, and the more stuff, the better. The Drumstick always fit the bill--crunchy, nutty, chocolate shell, chocolate-lined sugar cone, a little plug of sweet chocolate all the way at the bottom as a final sugar surprise. It was pretty much the perfect dessert, and I loved those suckers with my whole heart.

I would like to conclude the story with the funny little note that I haven't had one in years and when I read Nicole's wonderful post about making her own at home, I was filled with sweet childhood memories, but I had a Drumstick just last week. Possibly two.

But that doesn't stop me from wanting to try her very ingenious idea, which breaks the Drumstick out of its vanilla/chocolate dichotomy, and introduces the flavor concept to a whole new world of flavors--you can pack that sugar cone with any taste sensation your heart desires! Fill the bottom of the cone with chocolate chips to replicate that beautiful chocolate surprise at the end, pack the cone with some fancy gelato, dip in chocolate and nuts, and you've replicated the Drumstick, only better. I love homemade versions of commercial treats, because they always just seem to win, you know?

i know! it's kind of like how the book is always better than the movie.

while I love a drumstick, but ice cream truck fave has always been the creamsicle push-up, the charm of which is mainly in the delivery system, which to my knowledge can't be replicated at home.
