Can I say something right now? I have a bit of a cover song fetish. It started a very long time ago, with a rendition of "My Sharona" by Alvin and the Chipmunks, a version I still argue is a wee bit better than the original. I jumped from the excellent Camper Van Beethoven's "Pictures of Matchstick Men" to Kylie Minogue's "Locomotion" and have honestly jeopardized friendships with my assertion that I enjoy "Sweet Jane" less when it is sung by Lou Reed (even though I'm a huge Lou Reed fan) because there is an element of languid torpor that I crave in my dysfunctional woman songs and the Cowboy Junkies hit the sweet spot. But that's just me.

Thus, in honor of April Fool's Day, we're serving up a super-sized helping of audio tomfoolery. Here are 40 totally classic songs that have been switched up a little, to some delightful results. And who knows? You just might realize that something was missing in your life and that something was the amped up, speed guitar version of "Rainbow Connection".
