This weekend I got blindsided by a full blown girl crush on indie music darling, Amy Millan. I am a little breathless, even now. She looks and sings like an anime character, and this weekend, standing on a historic stage not ten feet away from me, she was dressed like a bank teller from the '80s, looking a little surprised, as though she woke up that morning and someone asked her to fill in.

The second voice of Stars, Torquil Campbell, sang many of his lyrics directly to her, but she never returned the favor, instead she looked out to the darkened audience, glowing with the light of dozens of digital cameras and iPhones. Later, she confessed that she was singing to the theatre ghosts that were watching from the abandoned second and third balconies. Amy is low-key girly, breaking into the all boys club of not only Stars but also Broken Social Scene before that.

During the concert this weekend, she wrapped a guitar cord around her shoulders like a stole and then did a little dance around the stage in what must have been vintage four-inch heels. Of the band, she says, "I live a very sexy existence with the boys in my band--in fact, too sexy. In fact, I get into trouble sometimes." Damn straight.

And she's rumored to be able to hold her whiskey like a champ. And my vantage point from the VIP section meant that her tummy was in my direct line of sight. Some women in rock wouldn't have worn a tight cigarette skirt with a tummy that wasn't perfectly flat, but (how do I say this without it seeming like a backhanded compliment?) Amy Millan isn't interested in that Spanx crap. In fact, she defies type in a world of the skinny white indie rock grrls (ex.: Feist, Jenny Lewis, etc.) And that? Is way hot.

Do you think Gwen Stefani would walk on stage with even the tiniest shadow under her gut? In fact, after Britney's VMA performance, it would be tantamount to celebrity suicide. And yet, there's Amy Millan, not really caring, just playing with the boys and undoubtedly breaking their hearts without even realizing it. So yeah, girl crush on Amy Millan? Totally rock solid.
