![]() Photo via Splash On last night's America's Next Top Model, the issue of size and body image raised its head (amidst the drama of wondering which pre-model threw out the others' coffee) when the girls were sent out on Go-Sees. Plus-size Whitney faced the same situation that countless other plus-size ANTM contestants have faced before her: most designer sample sizes simply won't fit and designer Pamella Roland tells her straight up that there's no way she'd hire Whitney. Although really, this begs the question of what Tyra's motive is with the whole insistence that the plus-size girl even has a chance in this competition? If they did, if they were actually on even footing, couldn't more than one plus-size girl be chosen per cycle? I want to believe this isn't a situation of tokenism and I'm not really expecting some kind of magical fairytale world where all different sizes walk the runway, but the job of being a model is "wearing clothes" and the girl actually can't "wear clothes" because of a manufactured situation created by the show's producers. What is the motive? I would like to think that in the real world, Whitney wouldn't have chosen to see Pamella Roland on her own, knowing that the designer only hired size twos. But in this situation, it was just part of the challenge, and she made the best of it, so go Whitney! As though to make a point, the editors show size zeroFatima being denied for being too thin as well, but then the glorious Stacey Bendet (who has a history of employing the eensy weensy models) tells Fatima that she's perfect. So it's not like it's comparable, because while Shoshanna Lonstein (yeah, Seinfeld's ex) concedes that she would probably hire Whitney, it's not exactly the same reception that Fatima's size zero is getting, you know?
Tyra&Co wanted
me to believe in the possibility of a plus-size ANTM winner, with all their talk
of booty and curvy and a million other buzz words. And I totally swallowed it
hook line and sinker because I WANT to believe. I really do. But in reality, it's all just
pretense. So yeah, I'm back to Camp Jaded. And to be clear, if you're a
plus-size girl on ANTM, you don't get the boot for being over size four, you get
the boot for "losing your sparkle." Whatever that means.
Unlike me, Whit tries not to get upset about it, because the run down feeling is the same thing that destroyed Toccara, Diana, and to some extent, Keenyah, who gained a pounds and got cast as as an elephant and "Gluttony" in separate photo shoots. Who wouldn't get worn down by that? Back to the show, the favored size two Claire (who does the angular couture posing so well that in my head, I had started thinking of her as "Clairecrow") gets the boot for not being a chameleon. For those of you playing along at home, "being a chameleon" just happens to be the reason that Amie got the boot last week. So if you're still trying to follow the judges' logic, just forget it, because it just doesn't exist. 3 CommentsLeave a comment |

Camp Jaded?
is that anywhere near the camp tyra runs for girls so she can PUMP their selfesteem just in time to crush it on her ANTM show?
There has been two "plus-sized" contestants on a previous cycle
I am loving Whitney much more than any other plus-size from past cycles for some reason. As I watched her deal with the Pamella Roland disappointment I was thinking "But Shoshanna is next and Shoshanna will be size 10 FRIENDLY!" and I was happy to be right. Cause it's totally true that ANTM wears those poor beauties down and grinds their "sparkle" right off them. But Whitney's ability to rebound this week had me saying "she's going to make it- farther than allll the others!" Because I am dumb and thought I was emotionally connected to more than fourfour's recaps for a second.
