Girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice, while boys are apparently made of pizza and beer and sometimes asparagus. This is part of the reason why women tend to put on weight after they begin to cohabit: suddenly a different appetite is driving grocery decisions and guys eat fewer veggies, in general, than girls. But really, who can blame these guys? Think about a random fast food commercial...is the customer a girl or a guy? The commercials featuring Carmen Electra don't count--you know that she's not in the commercial for the sake of the girl viewers, right?

Naturally, not all guys are into the gravy. Macho Tony Gonzalez gets all his gridiron power from a vegan diet. And while there are some sexy guy vegetarians out there (although Kevin Eubanks? Not my first pick), it's kind of expected that guy food is going to involve buffalo wings, bacon and perhaps something deep fried, while girls are expected to eat salad, so any deviation from that will raise eyebrows. A guy eating a salad? That's a Larry the Cable Guy joke.

When I moved in with Esteban, I remember being shocked that after years of cooking, I had no idea how to make a roast and had to turn to a middle-aged coworker who unlocked the secrets of roastdom. And while he's taught me to appreciate a perfectly aged New York Strip, I've shown him a little veggie loving and now he prefers a breakfast of yogurt and recently ate a bag of rice cakes I had bought purposely to snack upon while watching The Biggest Loser.
 
Is there a way to combat the guy food dilemma? How do you make healthy fare as sexy as a plate of drippy nachos? Even if his metabolism can burn through all of the excess, all that sat fat and sodium isn't doing anyone any favors. Any tips for getting all of those gut busting munchables out of the house or off the coffee table? What's a girl to do?

I think you've asked the million dollar question! I've slowly brought my husband over to the healthier side, but it's taken years! Left to his own devices dinner would be a steak the size of his plate. Now when he works out of town (where he doesn't benefit from my veggie filled cooking), he makes sure he eats "something that grows out of the ground and is not deep-fried" at least once a day. (Those were the criteria I had to lay out for him...)

Not that this applies to all men, or even my husband all of the time, but when it comes to food, he can be super-lazy, so if the easiest thing is to eat hot dogs, he'll eat hot dogs. I counter this by not buying hot dogs, so if he really wants them he has to get up and go buy them. On the other side, there have been occasions when the easiest thing was the huge bag of baby carrots I have all the time, so he ate half the big bag while watching TV.

All that said, I struggle with being the "food police". I always hated watching the Cosby Show and seeing Cliff sneak pie under bunches of lettuce to get it by Claire. I thought to myself-he's an adult, why can't he decide what he's going to eat? In my weaker moments, I give my husband heck when he eats a pie for dinner, because I say "I want you around for a long time, so you can't eat like that" but at other times I just try to walk away and bite my tongue.

Clearly from my above diatribe I've given this a lot of thought!! Glad to hear others wonder about the same thing!

It's interesting- As a teen, I thought that eating McDonald's and junk food all the time would be great. I think that your comment about advertising targeting teen males is spot on. I have a feeling that it's worse than guys don't know vegetables are good enough- it's that we don't even believe they are. How to bring guys back to the altar of potent vegetables? Grow some food and eat it. Start gardening, visit an organic farm or volunteer at a CSA.
