One would think that the idea of needing food within an hour of waking up would not come as a surprise to me and yet, the thought of breakfast doesn't even occur to me until I am either walking out the door or during my commute. I am a smart girl, and yet, so very stupid about nutrition. And I know that since I'm currently trying to lose a few (many) pounds, I should totally be grooving in the morning vittles. Of course, since I know that I'm a space cadet until I've had some caffeine, I should just get a game plan and set the scene for breakfast the night before.
Today, my breakfast was half of an English muffin, a piece of cheese, a cappuccino and a vanilla cupcake. Clearly, some work is needed. Below are a bunch of ideas for breaking your fast, but I need your suggestions too!

This morning I had a spinach/parmesan bagel with cream cheese from my favorite hometown organic bakery, but I usually don't eat out for breakfast. I'm usually a cereal girl, because it's so easy and convenient. I look for the highest fiber and protein content and usually use almond milk. Just recently, though, I've been falling in love with steel-cut oats with apples, craisins, a touch of milk, and some agave nectar to sweeten it. I also like Kashi waffles, toasted with peanut butter.
This morning I had a chocolate chip bagel with light cream cheese, a banana, and my multivitamin, chased with a glass of icy cold water. I picked up a hot chocolate on the way to work to finish it off.
That bacon and chive frittata looks SO yummy! Bookmarked for a weekend - I have a totally separate set of breakfast ideas for weekend breakfasts. This weekend I might make Drunken Cheesy Bread.... nom nom nom.
See, I can never forget about breakfast, because I wake up ravenous every day. (Also, with the top sheet shoved all the way down to the foot of the bed. Possibly, I jog in my sleep, although nobody's ever mentioned it.) But I also work out in the morning, so I don't want anything too heavy. Usually I have a whole grain english muffin or toast with a bit of peanut butter on it and maybe some weak tea. And then after my workout, I usually have some fruit and plain yogurt with a little granola in it. I am super-fortunate in that my gym, office, and two grocery stores are all within walking distance of each other, though. Otherwise, I would probably resort to the vending machine.
On mornings when I don't work out, usually because I have consumed too much wine the night before, I find that the reduced-fat turkey bacon sandwiches at Starbucks aren't that bad, and are also decent hangover food.
I make something like that oatmeal raisin cookie using steel cut oats instead of rolled oats. Because I'm lazy and hate dishes, I make six portions' worth at a shot so that the spousal unit and I have each have three breakfast's worth.
Put it in the fridge in a sealed container and it keeps perfectly well. It doesn't take any longer to make three days' worth of breakfast than it does to make one day's worth. If all you have to do is put it in a bowl and throw it in the microwave, then the odds are you'll eat breakfast every morning.
The spousal unit used to whine about having to eat the steel cut oats every morning. "It's so heavy," he'd complain. Now he's hooked and actually whines if I *don't* get around to preparing a batch for some reason.
He works as a carpenter and before we switched to the oatmeal breakfast he'd always have a mid-morning "crash" where his energy would plummet. On oatmeal days, it just doesn't happen.
I do different breakfasts on weekends too. That's when I try to go all out and make a nice sit-down breakfast. Last weekend we had bacon and cranberry pecan waffles. Mmm!
Typically in the morning we have granola of some kind. Either a bar or loose granola from Whole Foods. Which is also great with yogurt.
Nigella is also my girl crush! I adore her.
What is drunken cheesy bread? Does it involve using beer in the bread dough? Because it sounds good and I am envisioning cheddar beer fondue in the form of yummy warm bread.
I'm in a breakfast rut right now, but one I *heart* beyond reason. I toast a whole wheat English muffin, scramble one egg in the microwave, and microwave a sausage-inspired soy patty. I top the muffin with the scrambled egg, the soy patty and a slice of the cheese of my choice. That and a glass of OJ, and I've got a filling, tasty breakfast in about 5 minutes.
Hey, thanks for linking to my frittata! For breakfast inspiration, I love this blog: Simply Breakfast. The photographs are unbelievably beautiful -- granola never looked so gorgeous!
Standard morning for me is a protein drink first thing after I wake up (usually Nectar Fuzzy Navel), followed by actual food once I get to work: either Fage yogurt (mixed with crunchy dried apple bits, a little stevia and some Kashi GoLean) or some of the frozen Trader Joe's steel cut oatmeal (again, with a little stevia and some dried apple bits). Weekends I am all about the eggs, and frittatas are my new obsession. You can toss so much into them and voila, perfect meal!
Two sticks of string cheese, a cup of coffee w/ half & half, and a bottle of orange juice.
I'm totally setting out some cereal tonight.
And thanks to y'all, I am now signed up for a damn Self One-Month makeover. I am sheep. Baaa!
did she say "thanks for linking to my frittata"? ;-) heh he he. This morning i had sliced tomatoes on toasted vogels bread with some torn-up fresh basil leaves and black pepper + perhaps just a leetle too much butter .. nom nom!
Ooh, Nigella is the tastiest looking foodie! The Cub and I drool on tight shirt days!
Today I scoffed rolled oats prepared with Unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk, 1/2 of a diced fuji, some cinnamon, some vanilla, and added afterwards: a tablespoon (okay, tablespoon and a half) of creamy peanut butter. Coffee, of course, with that soy creamer stuff.
The Cub says my oatmeal creation looks and smells gross, but I think it is heavenly and I dream about it at night.
This morning I had plain ol' oatmeal and coffee, because I forgot to eat until I got to work and that was what I had under my desk. It was blah.
One of my favorites: A piece of toast or two topped with avocado (used in place of something like butter or cream cheese), topped with sliced hard-boiled egg. You get protein, carbs, good fats, and it's damn tasty AND easy to put together in advance (aside from the toast, of course).
I recommend you buy a microwave egg poacher. It made my morning routine go much more quickly! I poach an egg while toasting a whole wheat english muffin. If I'm in a big hurry, I can take that to go as a sandwich with a piece of fruit, or if I have time to sit and eat, I put the egg on the muffin with some salsa on the top and then have half a grapefruit. There is always coffee involved also.
If you're very hurried in the morning I recommend making some healthy muffins/bars on the weekend, wrapping them into one portion size, and then getting portable fruit (apples, bananas, pears, grapes) and some string cheese. That way you can throw it all in your bag and eat on the run. I put all the quick breakfast stuff in one part of the fridge or cupboard-that's the way I got my husband to eat a proper breakfast! Good luck!
You guys, these are great suggestions! I am totally going to buy an egg poacher for the microwave, because I am a big fan of poached eggs and also, of fast. Anyway, today you all inspired me and my breakfast was steel cut oatmeal with agave syrup and cinnamon. I didn't even look at those cupcakes sitting there, so luscious and inviting on the counter!
Hi there! I just wanted to say thanks for linking to the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Oatmeal recipe on my blog :)
To be honest, I have a pretty rough time with breakfast, myself. I just can't seem to give up that extra 15 mins. of sleep to get up & prepare something healthy. So, unfortunately, it's usually just a Kashi granola bar, some fruit, & a travel mug of hot tea for me!
By the way, I do plan to post another one of my favorite b-fast recipes soon - it's one I'm actually willing to get up a bit early for... I'll let you know when I post it, just in case you're still looking for a suggestion. However, it looks like you've received quite a few good ones already!
Thanks again for the link - I'm glad to have found your blog, too!
