You know that game, Gun to Your Head? It takes all the evil of MFK and all the stress of public humiliation and magnifies it into one, impossible Sophie's kind of choice. Imagine that there's a gun to your head, and you have to make a very important decision--which do you keep, and which do you give up forever: books or sex? Eating or sleeping? Sense of taste or sense of smell? And so on. Usually, I can come up with an answer that I feel good about fairly quickly; only once did I want to say please, just pull the trigger. And that was chocolate versus cheese.

I can't live without either, frankly. They both fill me with the kind of happiness that is difficult to match in any other way. They are both perfect foods. They are both essential keys to a good life, without which you may as well be living in a hole and banging your head on a rock.  But this weekend, I think I might have encountered the only argument that would ever sway me over to the cheese side, that could possibly let me turn my back on chocolate for all time, and that is the combination of a rich and creamy stilton cheese with, a drizzle of good, organic honey and fancy crackers. Just typing that made me a little shivery and way nostalgic. We picked some up as a pre-dinner appetizer the other night--and that's what we ended up having for dinner. The entire block of cheese, demolished, while we stood at the counter and made mmm, mmm, mmm noises, spilling crumbs and licking our sticky fingers and going back, greedily, for more. Hilariously, there is a recipe, great for parties! But if you can wait long enough for your guests to arrive, you have more self-control than I do.

Perfect foods indeed. Although, I'm gonna have to go with Dr. Pete's Praline Mustard Glaze over some cream cheese with crackers as a dinner substitute. If cheese and honey is your thing, you really ought to check this out.

One of my friends took some of that "Presidente" round brie, wrapped it in crescent roll dough, baked it for a while, and then drizzled honey over the top.

I'm not sure anyone else at the party got any.

The above suggestion in re: cream cheese also sounds promising. Then again, there are few combinations of cheese and crackers I find UN-promising. For example, last night for dinner, I had brie with triscuits and some grapes.

This is so weird -- I randomly asked the same question last night. The unanimous decision was cheese (we'd just had a scrumptious St. Augur, also a blue, also yummy with honey), but someone also looked at me with the saddest eyes and said, "Why would you even ask such a question? What sort of terrible world would we live in if we had to make that choice?"

Anne, I think we need to take a field trip to Tria. Anyone else want to come?
