![]() Photo via Splash We love to talk about how Renée Zellweger gained 30 pounds to play Bridget Jones, but as in all things Hollywood, anything girls can do, boys will do to the extreme. Hottie Jared Leto (okay, for reals? I've never really gotten the attraction) gained 70 pounds to portray Mark David Chapman, the guy who shot John Lennon outside of his apartment building, thus gaining entrance to the exclusive club of actors who have gained over 50 pounds specifically for a part in a movie. Who else has gone down the doughnut express?
As for Mr. Leto, he looks a lot like the guy you call when you
accidentally infect your work laptop with that virus that causes a
bunch of porn popups whenever you open a browser. Except I bet that
Jared doesn't smell vaguely of B.O. Of course, that's just conjecture.
What about other shocking physical on-screen transformations? Do you applaud when Charlize Theron gains 30 pounds to play a serial killer? Or when Adrian Brody whittles down to nothing in The Pianist? Or is it just a ploy at an automatic Oscar? *Mr. Bale was coming off of The Machinist, where he lost 63 pounds to play a severely emaciated character. What's more astounding is that he was able to put on that weight in just 6 weeks. And people think that the whole yoyo dieting thing is a myth? 4 CommentsLeave a comment |

I saw The Machinist and CB's weight loss was incredible. 100 pounds back on in 6 weeks though? HOLAY!
I wonder what that does to a person mentally...did it have a lasting effect on his self-image, I wonder? Controlled or not, I can't see how that kind of loss and gain could be good for a person's heart or soul in the long run.
How is a 100lb weight gain in 6 weeks even physically possible? I can sort of understand the first 60lbs coming back on quickly, if he was under his natural weight, but the other 40lbs? How??
Mostly I wish that Hollywood would be more open to actors and actresses of all sizes, so that all this instant weight gain/loss could stop. I know that it's completely wishful thinking, but how great would it be if a 250lb actor could play a 250lb character, rather than these guys force-gaining weight for a role, and then dropping it suddenly?
One of my favorite transformations was Benicio del Toro putting on like 30-40 pounds to play Dr. Gonzo in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Great role, and the open-shirted, sloppily-dressed nature of that character ensured that a fat suit just wouldn't have worked.
Chris, actually I was going to mention him, but he "only" gained 40 pounds, and I felt the 50 pound gain was a pretty elite club. George Clooney, Sylvester Stallone and Ryan Gosling have also gained about 40 pounds for various roles, but I don't think anyone has been quite as dramatic as Benicio's transformation.
