Holy Glass Ceiling, Batman!

She might have been your first girl crush ever, with her saucy spangled hot pants and that bustier that inspired fear in the hearts of petty criminals and supervillians alike, but Wonder Woman still rocks our world a thousand times over. Created in 1941, she's been flying the world in her invisible plane for a lot of years and still looks fabulous. She was the first female to gain entrance into the All Boys Club of Superheroes. Superman probably was man enough to suck it up, but I'll bet that Spiderman had a few petulant moments and called her Yoko under his breath. She pioneered the way for future female superheroes like the equal opportunity X-Men and Cat Woman (who might have been evil, but she was also awesome, especially when portrayed by Julie Newmar).

But Holy Glass Ceiling, Batman! Apparently in all this time, her comic books have never had an "on-going" writer who was female! Is Gotham much more forward thinking than the real world? Or is the penchant for drawing strong chicks paired with requisite 34DDD breasts and Dita Von Teese 0-circumference waists indicative of a far more pervasive sexism than one would think on the surface? Hell, Barbie gets a lot of shit, but in comparison, she's more realistic than those creatures on the pages of a comic book.

Perhaps I've just latched on to the Girl Power aspects of Wonder Woman because I have nothing else. There are no dumpy librarian types with apple shapes who are kicking ass and taking names, at least none portrayed in Benday dots. Wonder Woman is definitely a pioneer, but I wonder who is going to save the world from her impossible image. —Weetabix
