![]() One of you guys suggested the Larabar for a trial, so I snagged one on a trip to Whole Foods. Alas, they did not have the typical baseline flavor of Peanut Butter, so I freestyled and picked Cherry Pie flavor, because what's more American than that? Apparently a lot of things. I've never understood that saying, by the way, because the best cherry pie I've ever eaten was in the town of Woodstock in Oxfordshire, England. It defies explanation, and yet, there it is. I was a bit surprised, however, to see the ingredients list contains just three items. I turned the bar over, looking for the real ingredients list, but nope, that's it. Three ingredients. Cherries, dates and almonds. Holy crap, how does all of that even stick together? It likewise defies explanation. It wasn't until I read the smug little blurb on the side of the bar that depicted the millions of reasons I should be happy to feast on the Larabar that I realized that it's completely vegan and has zero sodium or cholesterol. What is more, one of these bars counts as a serving of fruit, so if you're trying for Five A Day, you can be an underachiever, because the Larabar is doing some of that heavy lifting. At 190 calories and 4 grams of protein, it's more of a snacky bar than a decent meal replacement, but hey, three ingredients. Three! You have to love the simplicity. Sadly, I did not love the taste. I think the name threw it off. Cherry pie makes one think of crusts and ice cream and a subtle almond flavor, not big chunks of almonds mixed in with a fruit paste. Which is not to say that the Larabar is bad, per se, but rather than I found it palatable yet I'm not exactly looking forward to eating another one (unless it's the banana cookie flavor, because I'm totally a sucker for anything banana flavored). Big ups for the simplicity and really, you can't get much more wholesome and nutritious. It's just that I think I'd rather eat a handful of fresh cherries and save this bar for the survival pack that I keep under my basement stairs in case my town is attacked by zombies. Dude, you never know. —Weetabix 15 CommentsLeave a comment |

Oh man. I was kind of excited by everyone in comments saying that the Larabar was better than the Luna bar. Liars. Wretched, black-hearted liars. I bought the cocoa-coconut Larabar and it was so horrible that I spat out the first bite and threw the rest in the green bin. Nastier than PowerBars, and that's saying something.
Oh no! I'm so discouraged to hear this, 'specially cuz Cynthia likes them so much and they're all natural and shit. Damn!
I think the Cherry Bar is sour. Try Banana, Apple Pie, and Cocoa Mole if you like spicy chocolate. You just might like it (a LOT more)
Larabar - ugh. I think I took a napkin and tried to wash my tongue off. I'll take your advice.. a handful of cranberries and save the Larabar bar in my trunk for the next time I'm stuck in the snow.
In re: the Luna Bar - The S'mores was ok, but the Lemon Zest tasted like dish soap, if dish soap had dried out and become crumbly.
And I think I will be passing on "Labrabar." The three ingredients would probably taste better as a mini bag of trail mix. (dried cherries, almonds, dates...that actually sounds ok.)
GL, I hate the Lemon Zest one myself. And the Smores flavor is soso. I'm all about the Peanut Butter Cookie, however, and once upon a time, they also had a Peanut Butter and Jelly flavor that was odd and yet somehow very compelling. It's discontinued now. Anyway, the frosted Lunas are usually better than the non-frosted variety, as a rule.
The pecan pie and ginger snap flavors of the Larabar are EXCELLENT. I'm more drawn to the nutty/spicy flavors, as opposed to the fruit-based ones. As for the bars with cocoa in them, they're kind of gross. Though I'm not sure what I expected. The ingredients are fruit and raw cocoa beans . . . without the extra ingredient of "magic", it's pretty much going to taste like date-flavored dirt.
Anyone who doesn't want their Larabars can send them to me, because I LOVE THEM.
ooh ooh ooh maybe you'd like the Cashew Cookie one? If you like PB in general, it could be a winner. I can't stand the fruit Lara Bars but the cashew one is tasty and not so cloying. I bought six in Chicago coz you can only get them for like £1 each over here :)
>>Anyway, the frosted Lunas are usually better than the non-frosted variety, as a rule.
As is true generally with the frosted Anything, as opposed to the non-.
Hiya
Over here in the UK I bought a Larabar the other day and it was a very expensive purchase at £1.10 ($2.24 according to current exchange rates). Despite the expense it was a tasty experience and great to know that it wasn't filled with sugar and other crap! I recommend the pecan pie.
Might try a new one each pay day! :)

I love the larabar - but only the cherry pie flavor - the other flavors gross me out. I just feel really wholesome eating it. Plain cherries would be pretty good, too, though.
I adore the ginger and apple ones.
The cherry pie thing? I can explain it. It's because the expression references apple pie, not cherry:

I love the cherry pie Lara bar, sour cherries -mmmmmmmm. Even better though, is the Clif Nectar cherry and pomegranate. 150 calories - 4 ingredients: organic dates, organic sour cherries, organic cashews and organic pomegranate concentrate. I like it better than the Lara bar cuz it doesn't have a strong date taste. And it's a great source of quick energy before a workout.
