If you don't feel like getting off the couch to exercise, the next best thing is watching some women who do. Before you take that too literally and start watching your yoga DVDs on repeat, consider adding these films to your Netflix queue and pressing play to see some women play hard:

Blue Crush: Kate Bosworth stars as a surfer girl in Hawaii who is trying to make a splash at an upcoming competition while balancing not only her surfboard, but her family, love life and personal fears. The awesome surf photography made me want to grab a boogie board until I remembered I don't know how to boogie and I don't live near an ocean. It's a fun little film that shines attention on a sport dominated by men and also demonstrates the culture of competition and support amongst female athletes. When Kate's character catches that perfect wave, I nearly felt a drop of salt water on my own face.

Million Dollar Baby: Hilary Swank ate enough fish to give her elevated mercury levels when she got buff for this boxing film, so the least you can do is watch it. Swank's character, Maggie Fitzgerald, is a trailer-park-born waitress who's so poor she's eating leftovers off her customer's plates, but is still hungry to become a top boxer. She's got Clint Eastwood in her corner as a trainer, so you know his "Mo cuishle" has good odds of overcoming all that diversity and stuff. Warning: doesn't have the happiest ending in the world, so if you are looking for a feel-good time you might want to watch a film that doesn't knock you out with a right hook.

Bend It Like Beckham: Jesminder wants to play soccer, or "football" as they call it in the United Kingdom, but her traditional Indian family would rather she play the field to find a good husband. I would feel an urge to strap on some shin guards myself if my coach was Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Even if you don't learn how to bend it like Beckham after watching this film, you might pick up some tips on how to cook Indian food or just head out to the nearest Indian buffet afterwards like I did.

Bend it Like Beckham is one of my favorite movies. Love it. The best part aboutt he DVD is one of the special features called "Who wants to make Allu Gobi?" It's the director, her mom, and her grandma doing a cooking demonstration to make one of the dishes mentioned in the movie. The recipe is delicious and the three women are hysterical.

May I just say.... a boxing workout is the BEST workout EVER.

It's all about the legs.

If you liked Bend It Like Beckham, look for "Chak De India," a recent Indian movie about a national women's hockey team overcoming a sexist sports system and the regional tensions that divide the players.

The plot is similar to any formulaic sports film, but there's a genuinely feminist spirit behind it and a lot of inspiring strong girls getting their game on.

Oh, and the coach is played with restrained passion by Shah Rukh Khan, a totally hot Indian film star- If he were coaching me, I could do anything. ANYTHING!

The film's website is here: http://www.yashrajfilms.com/microsites/cdi/cdi.html
