Last we talked about vitamins in general but Pamela wants to know about prenatal vitamins. What should we be taking?

You should start taking prenatal vitamins about three months before you think you want to get pregnant. I can't say I've come across any organic prenatals, but there are some good, whole food complex ones that don't have fillers, binders, extra sugar, too many synthetic products, etc. My favorite is Rainbow Lite brand. Go to any health food store and they should be able to guide you well. Prenatals either come in 4–6 tablet per day doses, or a "one a day" type of dose. The one a day is obviously easier, but if you can remember to take several tablets throughout the day, it will maximize absorption potential.

Also, if you are thinking of getting preggers, go nuts on dark leafy greens! Spinach, chard, kale and bok choy just to name a few—full of folate, B vitamins, magnesium, calcium and other goodies that you and your baby need, especially in the first trimester!

How important is it really to eat organic? Some of that stuff is really expensive! Are there some foods where it's more important to eat the organic version?

I know, I know, organic is more expensive. I think it really matters with certain fresh produce and all animal products. In this country, if you are not eating an organic, or at least naturally raised animal, it is guaranteed to be full of hormones, antibiotics and other fun chemicals to make those creatures grow at max speed. Yuck! So any dairy or meat product, spring for the extra $2.00.

For produce, check out this website for a list of the most contaminated fruits and veggies. Be strict about the worst ones, and maybe save a buck on the ones that aren't usually grown with so many chemicals.

For everything else like beans, grain products, nuts, etc., I suggest to do your best in balancing costs.  There are many reasons eating organic is so important, but the top two are:

1. That actual food does not contain chemicals and dangerous toxins.
2. Organic food is grown on soil that has not endured years of chemical abuse. This kind of abused soil cannot possibly create food that is rich is essential vitamins, as it has been stripped of its own rich fertile health. So, in general, organic food is so much healthier in terms of nutrient content.

Guess it wouldn't kill us to pony up the cash. We can take it from the shoe fund.
