I really, really don't like drinking water and frankly, I don't really ever feel thirsty. I'm like a camel in the desert. Fix me! Camel friend, it is time to turn into a leopard and drink that water! You have probably lost your thirst response as a cumulative effect of years of keeping your body at a slightly dehydrated level. It won't affect you short-term (only because you are used to it), but it will long term. Eventually, your skin will start to resemble your grandma's way too soon, your kidneys and liver will get toxic and if you are like my mom, you will get kidney stone after kidney stone and just keep going, "I know, I know, but now I can't change my ways!" So, my skin-loving, beauty-relishing, kidney-functioning friend, drink the aqua now. We have two obstacles to get it down: remembering and liking. For remembering, the thing that has hands down worked best for my clients is to get a pretty, visually enjoyable water bottle. Something you will like staring at ALL day, not just a little plastic thingy. Fill it, keep it with you wherever you go, and keep it in front of your face so you can sip all day. Every hour, take more than a sip and try to drink a quarter of the bottle in one sitting. For liking, put anything (except artificial sweeteners) in that bottle to make it tasty for you. My top choice is fresh lemon juice and agave nectar (sort of like an instant lemonade). Try any bottled juice and add as little as possible just for flavor. You can also throw in some bubbly stuff like Perrier and natural sodas. Try to keep your ratio of water to other stuff at no less than 3/4 water, 1/4 other stuff. Speaking of dehydration: should I really be salting my fries? What is that sodium doing to my body? Asking me if you should salt your fries is like asking me if you
should heat your Twinkie before you eat it. No fries, no extra salt!!
You don't need to add salt to anything. Only add when
absolutely necessary. Too much salt can mess with mineral balance, make
you feel tired and over-thirsty and cause high blood pressure. If you
do want a salty flavor in your food, try experimenting cautiously with
some condiments like tamari (Japanese brewed soy sauce), gomasio (sea salt and sesame seeds) and one of my all time 7 CommentsLeave a comment |

I used to drink A LOT of Diet Pepsi every day (close to 2L on average) and didn't think I was ever thirsty either. EVER.
When I decided to quit (last sip was July 27), I went cold turkey and drinking lots of cold, fresh water was key for me. I bought a case of water and put it in my fridge where I'd see it every time I went for a drink of DP. I've been drinking a lot of water ever since and always find it easier to choose water (over anything sugary / faux sugary) when there's lots of cold water waiting for me in the fridge, whether in a storebought case of water or just in a few nalgene-type bottles I've filled from the tap.
One other detail...possibly TMI...Even drinking 3-4 litres of water a day those first few days (and a lot of days since) it was at least three days before I started peeing all the time.
(my point about the pee being that my body was THAT dehydrated, and I had no idea)
A question on that note... do you ever STOP peeing all the time? I know it's such a stupid thing, but when I get on a water-drinking binge (normal amounts, but a lot for me!!), I have to go all. the. time. and it's really annoying. I know that shouldn't discourage me from drinking water, but it does.
you're in good company. the peeing thing way discourages me from drinking it. i'm a receptionist at a realty company, leaving my desk is frowned upon. obviously i'm not chained down. but realty customers and realty agents are touchy people who want what they want when they want, pee or no pee.
To make my water more palatable and enjoyable I add in True Lemon powder (www.truelemon.com - at my grocery it's sold in the baking supplies aisle near other flavorings). It comes in convenient packets that can be stashed in my purse, gym bag - wherever. It has no calories, it's derived from real lemons, it actually tastes as if you squeezed a fresh lemon in your water and even has some vitamin C in it. It also comes in a lime flavor but I prefer the lemon as it tastes more like the real thing.
Never fear, water drinkers, the peeing will let up! When I first started focusing on getting my water in, I was heading to the loo all the time and it drove me nuts. After a couple weeks, I guess my body sorted itself out, and my bathroom habits went back to normal.
I second Cynthia's suggestion of a visually-appealing bottle. Nalgene and Sigg both make good ones in neat colours/patterns.
A long time ago, to get in the habit of drinking water, I took a big pitcher and labeled it "Beauty Juice", filled it with water, and placed it prominently in my fridge. I didn't really like water at the time, but somehow I'd drink beauty juice all day long!
Changing habits is hard, but you can do it. I'm 47 and get told all the time that I have great skin. I'm convinced this is because I have been a dedicated water drinker for over 20 years now.
