So, MSN Men has a list of 15 women they've determined are the sexiest women over 35. So, my problem is two-fold. First, what's up with the 35 thing? Why 35? Is it exceptional somehow? Is it the tipping point into unsexiness? Are these women somehow defying that chasm filled with Depends undergarments and false teeth? WTF, MSN? W. T. F! Here's the breakdown:
Do you see anything wrong with this list, this all-encompassing list of the best of everyone above the random MSN-determined point of an exceptional age of 35? Yeah, I see it too. When you make a list, a ranking of some sort, you take upon yourself a responsibility for judging the entire lot of humanity‚ the whole arena of sexiness when regarding women who have hit or are beyond their 35th birthday. Now, granted, we'll assume that they didn't poll the world, because my grandma is pretty damned hot and certainly she would have received at least honorable mention, but they also did not title the list "15 Women We Think Are Hot and Are Also Over 35." No, not only is it the Sexiest Women Over 35, but they ranked them. Meaning Salma Hayek is hotter than Monica Bellucci (and really, no argument, we suspect Salma is the hottest woman on the entire planet). But Elle MacPherson is the grand dame of the bunch at a geriatric 44. That's a powerful statement, isn't it? In the whole of humanity (or scope of MSN Men's notice) they could not find one single person more than 9 years outside of their arbitrary start point. MSN writers Craig Playstead and Matthew Cooke tried to justify their picks by claiming that sexy was more than just appearance, writing, "How she carries herself, her attitude, and how she conducts her life are every bit as important as how she looks. A woman with no redeeming social value might be "hot" (*cough* Paris Hilton), but she'll never be truly sexy." And yet, their list contains women who average to the age of 39 plus change, out of the entire realm of sexy women. That seems statistically impossible! Who did they miss in their myopic misogynistic view? Marg Helgenberger just gets better with age and is the first person who has ever made me rethink those lines around the eyes as underlining her delicate beauty. Andie MacDowell, certainly, even though she stops being sexy as soon as she opens her mouth. Michelle Pfeiffer, definitely. She continues to be so gorgeous that filmmakers force the characters she plays to bump into things and fall over a lot, just to overcome the fact that she's so beautiful she seems to be inhuman. And what about Helen MoFo Mirren? We would so hit that. Kim Cattrall is undeniably gorgeous and we'll bet her breasts still look incredible when they hit the big screen in the upcoming SATC movie. Sela Ward? My husband Esteban practically foams at the mouth over Sela freakin' Ward. And where, for the love of God, are Sophia Loren, Ann-Margret and Raquel Welch? These women defined sexy and still set the rules to this day. Boo on MSN for giving a cookie to those of us over 35 but implying that sexiness was all about how closely you still managed to look like a 21-year-old. I have no answers, only call outs, but I just refuse to let MSN's arbitrary youth-centric bullshit go without saying something. I am tired of women being disregarded when they've lost a very narrowly defined societal definition of what is attractive. Sex appeal does not stop with a few character lines or grey hairs and somehow, we suspect that Ms. Loren and Ms. Mirren wouldn't give those MSN dweebs the time of day. --Weetabix The comments want to know which women over 35 you think are incredibly sexy. 12 CommentsLeave a comment |

Also, Isabella Rossellini. Still amazing.
I'm just outraged that I'm not on the list.
Seriously, though, MSN probably gave men a list of 15-20 women and asked them to rank them. So this particular list was probably predetermined from the outset. Stupid, silly, fluffy story by MSN, but excellent response by Weetabix.
They always give that crap about how she carries herself, blah, blah, blah. My guess is that Paris Hilton would have still made the list if the women hadn't had to be 35+.
I know she's a nut bag, but Sharon Stone looks fabulous.
I's trade my legs for Tina Turner's any day. And Angela Bassett's arms? Hmmmm-baby.
But for my money, Cate Blanchett is very, very sexy.
I also have a problem with this "35" thing. Since getting pregnant everything is like "if you are over 35" - I'm 37, and I'd like to know how 35 became the magic line between OK and PROBLEMS. Besides, there can be a big difference between one person's 35 and another person's 35!
My boyfriend has it bad for Meryl Streep. It's how I was able to get him to watch The Devil Wears Prada with me.
i'm going to have to agree with cordelia, there is a huge difference between one person's 35 and anothers as is clearly illustrated on that list. Who knew that Naomi Watts and Diane Lane are within 4 years of each other? They are both drop dead gorgeous. But I think a part of me has thought that Diane Lane has been over 40 for like the last 8 years. That's a huge difference when they could have been in high school together. But that's off subject...
What about Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox and Cindy Crawford???
Susan Sarandon. Emma Thompson. Jamie Lee Curtis. Oprah Winfrey. Christie Brinkley.
Mariska Hargitay.
'Nuff said.
Diane Lane is only 42? Like someone else said, I thought she was in her 40s a long time ago. She is absolutely gorgeous.
Mariska Hargitay would be my pick too.
Lena Olin. Damn, when she was Mommy Spy on Alias, I practically watched the show just for her. No woman, of any age, has ever affected me like she did. My lord that woman is hot.
I consider Salma Hayek to be the most gorgeous woman ever, and she's on the list. Let's see...Who else?
Monica Bellucci is smolderingly sexy.
Queen Latifah is 37, and more stunning every year.
Jeanne Tripplehorn is definitely what the boys call a milf.
And my husband remains quite mental over Sandra Bullock.
I'm watching season two of Las Vegas and Cheryl Ladd looks unbelievable. She is still drop dead sexy.
Vanessa Williams is a knockout, too.
Oh, and Kyra Sedgwick. That woman's arms are ripped.
