When I showed up to the Fancy Food Show, I went first to the Organic Pavilion mostly out of occupational obligation. After all, despite our frequent discussion of bacon, we do try to take the health angle as often as possible on Elastic Waist while still never missing out on any of our favorite foods, drinks, and the social events where all this yumminess is present. But sometimes, let's be honest, organic, all-natural, "health" foods can be a little depressing. But the big surprise for me was that there, cordoned off in the basement, were the most exciting products of the entire show. Cool, modern packaging, and knock-it-out-of-the-park taste reigned supreme among the organic products. Here's a short and totally unofficial list of the best of the best:
Organic Nectars Non-Dairy, Raw, Organic Vegan Gelato
I know what you're thinking. "Why in God's name?" right? You are
not a vegan, you do not eat raw, et cetera, but what I'm telling you is
that it does not matter. This is some of the coolest, creamiest, most
delicious frozen goodness you will have pass your lips.
Phoenicia Patisserie
When
you want sugar and richness, you probably don't think, "I must have
baklava!" You might change your mind when you taste the pistachio nut
rolls from Phoenicia. These would be such a show-stopper pulled out
after a dinner party.
Highland Harvest Organic Whiskey
As
if you needed another reason to booze it up, this whiskey goes down
smooth as mother's milk for those days when you really just don't care
to feel the burn.
Izze Esque
If
you love Izze sodas but don't like to drink all your calories away,
you'll be heartened to know that they've heard your pleas and they've
listened. Izze Esque are the new low-calorie sodas in limon, black
raspberry, and mandarin.
Ecco Bella health by chocolate
You're
going to eat chocolate whether or not it makes your bones strong and
skin beautiful, but Ecco Bella has just made things easier for you by
adding superfood essences of seaweed, blueberries and all kinds of
other powerful antioxidants, herbs, vitamins and minerals to their
chocolate bars.
Seafare Foods
A
Maryland native was just telling me to avoid canned crab at any cost,
but I'm still seduced by the fact that I won't have to wrangle with
spindly crustacean legs to extract some meat if I can just pop open a
can. This wild caught crab is as close to fresh as you can get.
Back up above sea level among the non-organics, the world seemed less
wholesome and grass-roots, with lots of unneccissarily large signs in
neon colors (I'm talking about you, Jelly Belly), and intimidating
French people with shiny shoes and perfect hair forcing more pâté upon
me than I could handle (D'Artagnan, you had me at "wild boar sausage"). Some noteworthys I would be remiss to not mention include:
Twist
If you have to choke down your daily 64 ounces of aqua, Twist makes
it easier by adding a squeeze of juice. Not sweet, just simple, 100%
natural, and perfect.
Sence
Leave it
to Europeans to make everything pretty. Sence is "a rare European rose
nectar" that tastes like drinking a bouquet of flowers in a good way.
Would be so good with champers.
Vosges Haut-Chocolat
The
ladies at this booth stole my little heart for making the dark little
chocolate morsels so very, very sexy. Oh, and for bringing into the
world a chocolate bacon bar. I shit you not. Paging Weetabix, can you hear me? --Sarah McColl
