Who hasn't had that annoying friend who could eat and eat and eat and never gain an ounce? God, that friend is annoying. Anyone who has dieted knows that while it is possible to live on celery sticks and oxygen for three weeks--despite the mathematical logic of calories in versus calories out--the scale creeps downward at an insulting pace, or worse, refuses to budge despite your most Spartan tactics. Of course, if you were to complain to anyone, they would suspect that you were dipping the celery in Nutella. Get ready for some vindication. In a recent study on childhood obesity, Science Daily Link researchers were shocked to find out that the teens who ate the least had the highest percentage of body fat. This group usually moved the least and tended to be girls. The theory is that by restricting your calories, you get tired easily and are less likely to move, while noshing on high quality food gives you energy. Screw Slim-Fast! Clearly that public service dude was right: Never underestimate the power of cheese. 2 CommentsLeave a comment |

A day without cheese is a day I pretend didn't happen.
Honestly though, why were the researchers surprised? The people I know who are in the highly athletic and in really good shape are pretty much always eating. But they're always eating foods that are good for them...whole grain crackers or brown rice, lowfat cheese, lots of fresh fruits and veggies and lean protein. I decided last week I need to start emulating them rather than the people starving themselves on new diets.
Yeah. And never underestimate the power of strength training.
All that yo-yo dieting ravages your muscles. Your metabolism *is* your muscles. Strength training is the smartest thing any woman can do because as she builds muscle she repairs her metabolism.
It's a three pronged deal, really. You have to eat nourishing food. You have to get your heart rate up at least 30 minutes each day. You need to do strength training to rebuild muscle and reclaim the bone density that's already disappearing as early as your late 20's.
Women complain that strength training will bulk them out. HA! I've been pushing myself as hard as I can with strength training now for over six years and all it's ever done is make my body more compact and powerful.
I love my pretty little gym muscles, I really do.
